This is BETTER than Sea World! Spoken by my niece during her first trip to the range.
What. A. Blast. And points for me. She had a fantastic time and wants to do it again before she goes home next week. Maybe after church on Sunday...

Before the trip to the range, we had a complete gun safety review, as well as a discussion about range rules and how the Mossberg Plinkster functions. At the range, I gave her some pointers as she burned up a ziplock bag full of .22lr.

Teacher and student. How cute! (Her, not me. Duh.)

Even the small youth-sized .22 rifle was a little large for her, but she got the hang of it pretty quickly.

I started out by loading and setting it up for her, but she quickly insisted on doing it herself. I'm still amazed at how quickly little kids learn things.

What a smile!

A Conviction You Won't Hear Much About |

Attorney Jon Gutmacher discusses a recent case that ended with the conviction of a man for "carrying a concealed firearm." Read his analysis. This is a good case study for anyone who wants to own, carry or use a firearm in Florida.
Gutmacher's advice is that in a similar situation, simply stay inside your home and avoid the confrontation altogether. While generally I agree with that sentiment, I think it is also worth noting that simply getting a concealed weapon permit gives you a degree of immunity from political-ladder-climbing prosecutors and bug-up-their-ass judges.
We really don't know all the details, but we can still take some valuable lessons away from this case.
The other thing this case brings to mind is Florida's silly statute which makes open carry illegal. Since "Conceal Carry" requires a license, and "Open Carry" is illegal, the only way you can have a readily usable gun on your person and not run afoul of state law is if you have a CWP and your gun is completely concealed.

Are other states similar to Florida in that the State will take away your hunting rifle if you are convicted of poaching?
I agree with the fines, and the loss of hunting privileges, but I'm not so sure about the state confiscating firearms for non-felony offenses. That kinda seems, er, to be of questionable constitutionality to me.
I doubt anyone will ever say anything about it though since it doesn't happen often, and those it happens to "deserve it".
Anyone have any thoughts? |

Not just because I can't afford it, but because Nevada is jerking CCW licensees around over stupid technicalities.
According the the NRA:
Florida will no longer be recognized because its permits are now valid for seven years instead of five.
Are you f***ing kidding me? What idiot wrote Nevada's law?
Oh well. Screw 'em. |

Look what followed me home!

A Colt Army Special in original condition. It has broken, but still usable grips. I've found grips for sale, and will likely replace them at some point. The finish is pretty poor, but there's no real pitting to speak of, the bore is shiny with sharp rifling, and it is mechanically sound. It locks up as tight as can be expected for what it is, and it is definitely shootable (the previous owner said he shot it occasionally.)
It isn't as pretty as Xavier's Colt, but I got a pretty good deal on it, so I'm happy.
I am still researching the history. Anyone have any good links or info for me? Proof House says 1912 manufacture date. Here is a parts diagram. Can anyone tell me anything else about it?

The new FWC rules are a clear indication that they haven't been reading my blog.
Not less harvest. MORE. M. O. R. E.
I really wanna know A) how they estimate the recreational harvest and B) how they determine that the estimate equals over-fishing.
I don't recall ever filling out a questionnaire about how many American Red Snappers I harvested last year (hint: none, because the season is too fucking short.) I do, however, recall not being able to catch any grouper because there were too damn many red snapper eating our bait before it hit the bottom.
The FWC also is also showing what frickin' geniuses they are with regard to Gag Grouper. To supposedly protect Gags from being "accidentally" caught out of season, they are closing the harvest of every other type of grouper.
Brilliant!
Before long, you'll only be allowed to keep ladyfish and grunts. |

Thanks T.A. Mahoney for being the only store in the whole of Tampa Bay that had the odd sized leaf springs for my boat trailer. Seriously. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to find someone who carried something even close to what I needed for my trailer.
Of course, in addition to driving all the way across town to T.A Mahoney's, I still made about 4 trips to Lowes today to get various tools and additional cutting wheels for my angle grinder (for when the copious amounts of PB Blaster didn't work.)
New leaf springs, U-bolts, brackets, bunks, and repaired fenders... After replacing nearly every nut and bolt on the trailer, it is nearly ready to roll. I just have to finish fixing the lighting and get carpet for the bunks. Then, I have to figure out how to get my boat onto it... but that is an engineering problem that I will surely overcome with a few more trips to Lowes. |

I think it is safe to say the shortage is over. Sure, the prices haven't dropped to pre-oh-my-god-the-democrats-are-in-power prices, but it isn't hard to find 'em anymore.
Which is good, because I just sold my lower. I really didn't want to but, my boat trailer needs replaced, and funds had to be raised somehow. It wasn't really that hard to part with a half-finished firearm anyway.
Back to the shortage though... I just got notice from Anvil Arms that they have stuff in stock. Not just stripped lowers, but LPKs and fully assembled lowers as well. In stock. Like, I could buy one tomorrow if I didn't have to fix my damn boat trailer. Ah well.
Also, In case you didn't hear before, Anvil is now also making high-end Bolt/Carrier groups.
Update: Definitely over. Just saw a complete HBar for sale on a local gun trading board for $865. |

See parts one, two, three, four, five and six of this series.
Simply put, there's a lot of "stuff" that comes in handy for both backpacking and survival. Since it doesn't fit nicely into any other major category, I'm going to list all my miscellaneous items in one mega-list.- Knife - Discussed before, at length. This is so simple and obvious, but I can't count the times I've been in the woods with someone and they had to borrow my knife because they forgot theirs, or theirs wasn't sharp enough, or it broke... Just get a good knife! Spend the money and do it. This is the one thing that I can't possibly stress enough. In addition to my primary knife, I usually also keep some kind of backup. I also usually keep a razor blade, with my first aid kit.
- Headlamp/batteries - Headlamps are better than flashlights because they can be used hands-free, and they will illuminate whatever you are looking at. I don't even bother packing a flashlight or lantern. You can get a cheap LED headlamp that will work just fine, ...

In his post which completely trashes the Brady Campaign regarding the legitimate civilian use of cosmetically challenged firearms, he introduces his latest new shooter. I really wish I knew where he finds all these attractive women who are interested in learning to shoot...
Anyway.
Have you introduced someone to shooting sports lately? |

Glocks with adjustable grips?
So, does that mean I'll be able to swap out one awkward and non-ergonomic grip for a different awkward and non-ergonomic grip?
Update: Still just a rumor. Duh. The internet would cease to exist were it not for rumors. I think the "Glock carbine" rumor is more interesting anyway. |
