    On Martinis and Cocktails Comment
    Gregory Morris, 6/3/08 11:54:19 am
Folks who know me can tell you that I have very strong opinions when it comes to martinis. Although I am generally a scotch drinker, I am rather fond of gin as well, and a good martini is often the only way to begin a good evening.

Lawdog has a good description of a "correct" martini this morning. Although we may differ on the specifics (I do prefer quite a bit less vermouth, and an olive) we certainly agree on the key point: Martinis are made with gin and a little bit of vermouth. Not a lot of vermouth. You may garnish how you please. But it is still just gin and vermouth.

Now, what really makes my ass twitch is when people refer to cocktails as martinis, just because they are served in a martini glass. This is blasphemy, as far as I'm concerned. Even James Bond, who loved his vodka martini (note, it is a vodka martini, not a martini) never ordered a fruity what-the-hell-ever drink and call it a martini.

For future reference, the glass does not make a martini; the gin and vermouth does. Everything else is properly referred to either as a "cocktail" or by the name of the cocktail (which is not allowed to contain the word "martini".)

    My recipe for a martini:
-Pour two shots of gin (Sapphire or better, bottom shelf gin is for hobos) into a glass of ice.
-Open a bottle of dry vermouth, and wave the cap or cork dangerously near the glass of ice and gin.
-Replace the cap on your vermouth, and strain the gin into a chilled martini glass.
-Add a big toothpick with one or more olives. -Enjoy.
-Audibly scoff at anyone who orders a chocolate martini, an apple-tini, or anything that vaguely sounds like "martini" and isn't made from gin and vermouth.

    Update:
Robb, Uncle, and WeerdBeard have weighed in. Uncle is wrong... Martinis are made with GIN dammit. Robb is right, but doesn't like 'em. Weerd seems to be quite the connoisseur.

Three words - All Yours Dude.

Gin tastes to me what I'd expect it to taste like if I were to take a shot of bugs pray and / or possibly Brute For men.

For me my two poisons are Rum and Vodka.

Admittedly, gin is an acquired taste. But if you mix 1 part GOOD gin with 2 parts tonic and a few drops of sweetened lime juice, over ice, and you may give up your mojitos and screwdrivers.

Real rum is a drink for sea dogs. Fake rum goes good in frat-boy punch. Vodka is for getting communists and cheerleaders drunk.

Since I have a reaction to gin somewhat similar to Robb, I don't even drink martinis. Yet it still bugs the hell out of me when people talk about "gin martinis".

As for vodka, it's not just for communists. There's some fantastic stuff made up in Freeport, Maine called "Cold River Vodka". They actually distill it on site from Maine potatoes. If you take the tour, they even discuss the difference between how they make it, versus the shortcuts taken by the mass produced foreign crap most people buy.

Finally, if you're a scotch drinker, you might consider taking a vacation to Nova Scotia one year. It's supposed to be absolutely beautiful up there, which I intend to verify personally in a couple of weeks. In addition, they have the only scotch distillery in North America, Glenora Distillery. Actually, it is technically a single malt whiskey distillery, since it's not Scotland. I've never tried scotch, so I can't personally attest to the quality. But my step-father, as well as some co-worker, will be able too once I bring back a few bottles of it.

Been to Nova Scotia. Didn't get a chance to try the whiskey there though. I might give it a look though. Most people don't realize it, but Scotch Whiskey (Usquebaugh, the water of life) is the original spirit. The history is as amazing as that of wine or beer.

I know there is non-communist vodka, thats why I said "and cheerleaders." I keep a bottle of good vodka around as well, but only for company. It is basically a neutral spirit to alcoholify some other type of liquid (fruit juice, tonic water, etc.)

I also keep a selection of good Tequila. Unfortunately I have yet to find my favorite varieties in the US, so I just stick to Patron. If anyone knows where I can acquire Don Julio in the Tampa area, I'd love to hear about it.

I'm with ya Greg. Gin's good stuff, and a properly mixed Gin & Tonic can't be beat on a hot summer day.

Not big on Martinis, but if I do, I dirty mine up.

Well, my initial point in posting this was to rant against the improper use of the word "martini"... not to extol its virtues, nor to discuss the classical and modern variations on it. But, hey, why not :)

I make my martinis with a jigger of gin (beefeaters, thanks) and a very little bit of Noilly Prat vermouth I like 'dirty' martini's, so I add just a little olive juice AND one dash of worchestershire sauce. Shake with ice for a minute, strain into a chilled glass, add 2 or more olives. For fiber.

That same thing has been bugging me for several years now. Words have meanings but trendy twits want to say they're drinking Martinis without actually doing so. "Martini" has become a replacement for the word cocktail. Oh, and Martinis are served in cocktail glasses.
    Re: On Martinis and Cocktails
    Gregory Morris, 6/3/08 2:22:51 pm
Martinis are served in cocktail glasses, and cocktails are served in martini glasses. I understand the importance of correct glassware, but I'm not sure either name is wrong. Some cocktails are traditionally served in other types of glasses...

The point is, a martini is a combination of spirits, not a fruity diluted spirit.
