    Consumer Freedom Alert Comment
    Gregory Morris, 12/18/07 12:34:36 pm
Looks like Congress is sticking their nose into our business again.

    But what else is new?

I personally use CFLs almost exclusively because I save money on electricity, and they last longer so I buy bulbs regularly and don't have to climb ladders as often.

Now, for the enviro-nazis who think they are a "Good Thing", remember that CFLs contain mercury which isn't as good in landfills as glass and slightly charred tungsten. Clean water is more important to me than some knee-jerk holy-shit-we're-all-going-to-die greenhouse gas nonsense. So once the whole catastrophic man-made global warming pant-shitting runs its course, I'll wager that the next thing the government bans is mercury containing bulbs. See the cycle here?

Regardless, where in the constitution does it say "Congress shall have the power to regulate what kind of fucking lightbulbs are allowed in the private dwellings of the people." Exactly. Nowhere. The market is going to choose CFLs anyway. Let capitalism work. Now go on and get the hell out of my light sockets, you power-hungry congress critters.

I think we should just skip over the whole CFL business and go to LED lighting.... those will really last forever and use even less power.

Leo, it seems for once we agree 100%. LEDs are even more efficient than CFLs. Unfortunately, I doubt that light bulb companies are gonna want to sell you a product you never have to replace. That's like everlasting gobstoppers. I think there will be a niche market for LED lights (automobiles, streetlights, etc.) for the foreseeable future, and hopefully consumer demand will push the market in the right direction.

For now, I'm still gonna buy CFLs. And I still don't want the government telling me what I have to buy.

Actually, I believe you will find that LEDs are not as efficient as fluorescent bulbs on a basis of light output per watt of electricity. Their big efficiency advantage comes from having a fairly directional beam. If you need a reading light or any other light where you need some amount of light going to one spot, then you can get more light in that one spot with less electricity using LEDs. However, they are putting out less light overall than a comparable fluorescent bulb.

They are definitely more efficient than incandescent bulbs, though. And they do last a really long time. That's why so many traffic lights are going to LED. It's expensive, dangerous, and disruptive to replace a bulb in a stoplight. With incandescent lights, they also have to replace them before they burn out to avoid having an unsafe intersection, so they get even less life out of them they the package says they are good for.
