    Greg and Beth

the political and personal musings of two
    mountaineers living in west-central Florida

I need your opinion. Beth needs a gun. Comment
    Beth Morris, 11/2/07 1:15:45 pm
Ok, gun people. I need some help. I want to find a handgun. One thatís everything I need. Problem is that I donít know a ton about the different kinds and specs etc. And Greg is some how convinced that my perfect gun doesnít exist. Please tell me what you all think. I need some suggestions of what to try next time we go to the range. Below is a list of what I think I want. But Iím open to having my mind changed.

My list of what I want in a gun:
    1. Feels good in my hand- I want a long thick grip. Preferable curved. I have long hands and fingers and I want to feel like Iím actually holding on to the gun instead of holding onto my fingers. Interchangeable grips are a plus! I kind of like some of the guns that have both a compact and an extended magazine with a boot on it and the option to switch back and forth depending on the situation. I also donít mind it being heavy. Iíd rather have heavier than lighter.

    2. SAFE, SAFE, SAFE- OK, I am paranoid. Maybe itís because Iím just not 100% comfortable with handguns yet, but Iím like this in every aspect of my life. Iím a contingency planner extraordinaire. I really like the act of switching on and off a manual safety. But with that said Iíd also like it to have a grip and trigger safety. I know Greg says this might not be possible. But in my ideal world I can get anything I want. J

    3. Easy to operate- Too complicated and I wonít feel comfortable with it. I want easy to use, operate, and be able to disassemble myself for cleaning.

    4. Quality- This is very important. As Greg mentioned earlier the XD jammed twice on me in not too many rounds. Thatís not OK. I donít know how to fix jams quite yet, but will learn. It still makes me uneasy. What if I need to use it and Iím scared and shaky and develop a ďlimp wrist.Ē My life is dependent on it not jamming or misfiring. I want a high quality piece thatís been tested over and over and over and has been around long enough to work any kinks out. Preferable by a well-known gun maker.

    5. Revolver vs. Pistol- Not sure. I like revolvers except for one thing. No safety. And donít even bother to tell me it has a ďtrigger safetyĒ because that doesnít really count in my mind. I do want something that has a light trigger pull. I just like the way it feels. I might possibly prefer a metal frame, but Iím very open to polymer because of all the options.

    6. Caliber- So apparently Iím going to describe this all wrong. Greg tried. I donít see the difference. Something about muzzle loading pistol. Iíll just assume you know what I mean. I like anything between 9mm and .45cal. I will never consider a .22. Never.

    7. Carry Conceal- Iím a woman. I carry a purse. As long as itís small enough to fit in a huge purse I always carry anyway then itís small enough. I just canít deal with those teeny tiny guns that look like you can only use two fingers to hold the gun. I want something that might actually frighten someone if you had to point it at them. Thatís right gentlemen, size does matter.

    8. Price- Greg says I always pick out the most expensive things. Try not to tell me to buy a $1000 handgun.

Just cuz I'm the first one reading this, I'll start...
I think you should consider a medium-frame double-action .357 revolver. They have infinite options for grips. The trigger pull is always the same. You can get them either really light or really heavy. They will never jam or misfire. It is very difficult to accidentally fire a revolver, especially if it is in a holster. They don't have the capacity of a modern pistol, but if you can't put down a thug with 5 or 6 rounds of hollow-point .357, then you can't put 'em down with 15 rounds either.

I bet Robb would let you try his Dan Wesson.

I forgot one important thing. The trigger must pull the same way every single time. (like a glock)

Ok, thought on this for a few days actually... There are a couple of challenges - mainly, that you want EVERYTHING ;). And, didn't like the XD. So...

The Glock, Smith M&P, and Walther P99/PPS all come in compact versions and are great guns. All three have DA-only type trigger behaviors. But they don't have a manual safety.

The only two i've come up with: the new Ruger SR9 or one of the compact guns from HK. The Ruger is brand new, and I've never shot an HK - so i can't offer a personal opinion. But both are reliable companies with long historys, and both offer manual safeties. Both offer a trigger that has the same pull every time.

    Hope that helps. :)
