I just got an SMS from my friend who I recently took to the range for the first time. Since then we have gone a few more times and she's loving it. Anyway, she's a teacher at a school here in Florida. She is also one of the "Senior Project" coordinators at this school. Here is the message I got:"Thought you might find this interesting... there is a student who wants to do her senior project on gun safety... she wants to do a video of herself demonstrating proper procedures... she has her father's permission and the principal has signed off on it. The other coordinator doesn't want to approve it because it would be easy for her to get hurt then it would be a liability for the school. I am lobbying. You should be proud."
I am proud See how quickly a curious hoplophobe can turn into an advocate for real common sense? (BTW, I've decided to co-opt the Brady's favorite term.) Take someone to the range today! In a month, they may be standing by your side defending our rights.
Clearly, common sense would suggest that a senior project/report regarding gun safety is not a bad thing. We're not even talking about a political issue here... just safety. If she wanted to do a project about coal mine safety, and visit a coal mine, I bet the teacher would be fine with it. It is kinda sad that certain teachers and administrators fear "liability" more than they value education on very important topics. I still say gun safety should be taught in every school across the country. Regardless of how much you like or dislike guns, they exist and you might as well understand how to safely handle them. Sticking your fingers in your ears and humming "LA LA LA" isn't nearly as effective as proper training.
This girl wants to do her senior project on something she finds interesting and important... why not let her do it? She has a greater chance of drowning, getting hit by lightning, or being eaten by a shark than hurting herself while demonstrating FIREARM SAFETY.
Update: I offered to take the other (scared-of-liability) coordinator to the range for a hands-on demonstration of firearm safety. We'll see if there is any interest there. |
