    Spring got cold again Music
    Gregory Morris, 3/31/04 1:35:41 pm
It was beautiful. Its still not that bad... just a little chilly. I tell ya, this changing weather doesn't make my sinuses (sinii?) very happy.

Well, at least I finally started my tomatoes and peppers. I'm just growing hot peppers and tomatoes this year, along with some herbs, although I might pick up some zuchini plants and try my luck again this year. I decided not to do bell peppers again, because my dirt is too good... for all of you non-farmers, that means the plants get to be tree-sized, with cherry-sized bell peppers on them. Thats no good. Also, Beth is allergic to them, which makes it hard for me to do anything with them anyway... I usually just give them to my parents.

Anyway, I figure if I stick with hot peppers, I can always dry them and make hot sauce or something. Tomatoes can be used for just about anything, so thats a no-brainer. Of course, I don't really even have to plant tomatoes, because so many of them keep coming up every year without me even planting them... Last year, one volunteer produced more tomatoes than any of the ones I actually planted.

Anyway, I'm sure that most people could give a damn about my garden (unless they are being supplied with fresh veggies from it, which many of my friends/relatives generally are.)

In non-gardening news, we just got a new Adelphia DVR. Its slick. Pausing live TV, recording a bunch of shows, picture-in-a-picture. Hells yeah! Its like a TiVo, only slightly lamer and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I also just registered for classes today. When I was discussing the classes I wanted with my advisor, I realized I was going to take classes with the same exact professors I have this semester. Thats perfectly cool with me, although I like having new professors. These two profs, however, are especially cool, and especially nerdy. I'll be taking an advanced algorithms class, which is pretty standard stuff, and a multi-sensory computing class.

I'm excited about the multi-sensory computing class, because it is something that strays so far from the "normal" realm of computer science that it has to be cool. We discussed that class yesterday in my cluster computing class, because that particular professor loves to digress. In fact, she digresses from digressions a lot. In fact, it gets kinda recursive sometimes.

Basically, the multi-sensory computing class deals with ways to get input from a user and (mostly) output to a user. The catch is, we could give a damn about keyboards, mice, and monitors. We discussed haptics/force-feedback stuff, sound/musical representation of n-dimensional data (where n is greater than 3, or sometimes 2.) We discussed how there are primary colors, how sounds could be explicitly mapped by waveforms, how shapes and such could be easily described, but there are no "primary smells". In fact, we discussed the neurological, physiological, and chemical aspects of smells... in my cluster computing class. Somehow we ended up talking about George Washington and Fort Necessity, and how he might have done some stupid things which started the French and Indian War.

Thats the reason I'm taking multi-sensory computing... not for any specific theory, per se, but because I know I'll learn such a wide variety of utterly useless information. And that floats my boat.

tivo! here in boston, we have on-demand. it's like tivo (and your thing), but you don't get a box, it's just on the cable company's computer. from what i can tell.

but you're going to a bigger school. if there were only 3 professors in your department, you'd have to take them all the time.

also, that prof sounds awesome. as does multi-sensory computing.

Heh, one of the few benefits of WVU... I'm glad I didn't go to some po'dunk little school with one part time CS prof... that would have sucked.

Anyhoo, I hope it'll be a cool class. It looks like it will be. It also looks like we'll have a lot of freedom to do what we want. So if we want to invent a high resolution device that sends 5 dimensional data straight into your brain via a conduit in your ear, I think we'd be allowed to.

i don't think either of us can refer to a "po'dunk" school. i went to an elite small school, and you're going to a large, impersonal research institution. there are strengths and weaknesses for both.
