Greg on Politics(9): Evolution in School Comment
    Gregory Morris, 5/29/07 9:50:53 am
I'm not going to get too in-depth on this one, because others before me have done it so much better. And I've ranted about it before (over 100 posts ago.)

This isn't a debate. Evolution (better termed "descent with modification") is absolutely fact. Anyone who does not believe in evolution should not be allowed to hold a position within the government, or a position as a teacher anywhere in this country. I mean it. Demanding "Intelligent Design" be taught next to evolution shows a lack of understanding about what science is. To be "science", you must be able to disprove the theory. You can't disprove ID. Regardless of the religious and political debate surrounding it, if we can't separate science and religion in the classroom, we might as well give up on science altogether. Those who explain "Intelligent Design" by trying to disprove scientific fact, are simply fringe whackjobs. I'm not saying belief in the literal truth of the Old Testament is a bad thing, but ignoring scientific proof in favor of pseudo-scientific nonsense is borderline retarded. If you have faith in the literal truth of the Bible, then be content with your faith. These far-out crazies who seem intent on "proving" something or other about the Bible's truth are really missing the point, and lack "faith the size of a mustard seed".

I can reconcile my religious beliefs with evolution. God created the universe. God sustains the universe. There is nothing about evolution that contradicts that. There is nothing in the New Testament that contradicts evolution. My reading and understanding (albeit, not the literal word) of the Old Testament does not contradict my understanding of science. However, I do believe that evolution proves how "Intelligently" God set up the order of nature! By that, I mean that the intricacies of the natural world are far beyond our grasp. Each new scientific discovery is a tiny glimpse of the divine work of God's hand. All we can hope to understand is the basic fundamentals, of which evolution is one! Science is merely one method of pursuing an understanding of what God has given us.

I am fiercely against teaching ID side-by-side with Evolution, not only because it makes no sense to do so, but also because I would never want my children to learn religion from a government institution. My children will be taught about God at home and at church. When they are old enough, they will be allowed to pursue whatever course of religious study they prefer. Indoctrination of a particular religious view, from a young age, of incorrect information, by an inept school system.... I just cannot fathom that for my children. Keep science where science belongs, and religion where religion belongs.

Note: this is not meant to be scholarly work. This is simply my opinion. If I use someone else's ideas, I try to credit them where appropriate. I also reserve the right to change my opinion when provided with better information, as any half-intelligent person should do.
