    Kids and Guns Comment
    Gregory Morris, 1/7/10 5:38:11 pm
I accompanied a co-worker and his son to the Dade City Rod and Gun Club recently to lend my arsenal to his son's science project. He was doing a Box o Truth type experiment, shooting phone books with different calibers and seeing how different rounds penetrate. As my co-worker's arsenal is somewhat limited, I offered mine. In the name of Science and all.

    The long guns I brought.

    Documenting.

    Measuring.

    We
only got to fire the SAR-1 at phone books. Most of the ROs were excited and supportive and did everything they could to help us out, but word came down from on high that phone book shooting was not allowed (this isn't in the rules anywhere, just an on-the-spot decree) so we had to stop. But I brought a lot of guns, and a lot of ammo... so the kid decided we should engage in some recoil therapy anyway.

    M44

After shooting the SAR-1 some more, we shot the SKS, one of my Mosin Nagants, my newly acquired AR-7 (which cycled perfect, but the trigger reset spring was screwy), and my .50 cal muzzleloader.

Then we shot the Glock 19, two of my .38s, and my Ruger Single Six. They loved the Glock.... must have put 300+ rounds down range.

Co-worker's son had already gotten some measurements for his project during their last range trip, so only getting the 7.62x39 in wasn't that big of a deal.

Fun was had. Powder was burned. And a teenager who is already interested in guns was given an opportunity to increase his knowledge.

Sorry I dropped the ball and didn't notice your message on my LJ. I'd been checking my hotmail account for a reply and wondering when it would be and never thought to check the messages there.

My fault for not noticing. Most of the time the message notifier is just admin stuff from the site staff.

What a shame the range decided that he couldn't complete his science experiment :( (And, BTW what an awesome idea for a science project). But glad to hear that fun was had by all regardless.

The RO had 2 concerns. One was the mess of shredded books. They said they'd clean it up, but cleaning up the confetti would hold up everyone else at the range.

The second issue is that their method of holding the books together had the books on the ground, which means they were shooting down. The range is has baffles set up, and the berm is really high, but the RO was concerned that low shots could ricochet over the berm anyway. As unlikely as that might me, since there are houses down range it was a legitimate concern.

Before he started the project I suggested ballistics gel and a table... that would have alleviated both issues.
