    Dogs, Guns, and Lots of Good Stuff Comment

    I just got this link in an email this evening. It is definitely worth reading if you haven't read it yet.

    One of the most important things to do as a Second Amendment activist is to present our arguments in reasonable, intelligent ways that will appeal to your typical fence-sitter. MoveLeft does this quite admirably.

    The only problem I have with that post is that there are people out there who would say, "MoveLeft makes a good point! We should ban dogs ALSO!" Of course, neither should be banned and of course, that was not their point, but the same folks who would ban firearms might not realize the difference between absurdity and seriousness.

    I also want to point out something that bothers me about pit bull statistics (and perhaps I will make a separate post about this some other time, because it is only moderately related to this one). But as far as I have been able to track down, there are no reliable statistics on pit bull bites versus other breed bites per capita. Yes, there are more deaths related to pit bull bites than other dogs (or more german shepherd-related deaths), but severity of injury is not an indication of breed temperament or overall dangerousness of a particular breed. That said, if a cocker attacked me, it would hurt and draw some blood and maybe I would have to get some stitches, whereas if a pit bull attacked me the damage could be considerably more significant. This does not indicate which is more likely to bite me, just which would do more damage. Many focus on the fact that a lot of people own pit bulls and maybe that is the reason for the high statistic. Pit bulls are not the most owned breed, though, and there are not high death rates for labrador retriever bites or for toy poodle bites. I think statistics on bites per dog would be more relevant than severity of injuries or commonality of breed ownership.

    Unfortunately, the arguments for banning scary-looking breeds are the same as those for banning scary-looking guns. While we're at banning scary-looking things, we should ban people from having large muscles. If a scrawny guy like myself were to punch someone, it may sting a little. If someone with large muscles were to punch someone, it could send them to the hospital or kill them. Ought we ban scary-looking people as well?

    When muscles are outlawed, only outlaws will have muscles.

    Anyway, that was a useful read.

    You have a good point there. I thought my parody of HR3355 applied to dogs was clear enough, but I have to agree with you that there are enough people who'd not get the clue and conclude "MoveLeft makes a good point! We should ban dogs ALSO!" - not my intention. May I use your "scary-looking people" consideration in my article to better highlight the absurdity of the "assault dog ban"?
