Well, I didn't really think about it in terms of backpacking. For me, I'll take my little Sony Cybershot in a soft case on my belt or strapped to my pack. I don't backpack with the extra weight of a bigass DSLR :)

Over here, I just keep my Cybershot loose in my pocket all the time, so it is always ready for action. No strap needed.

Image stabilization is great and all, but in lower light situations, you need to hold the camera steady, and a tripod isn't always an option. Even in good lighting, it is better not to rely on fancy stabilization technologies, because they can still come at a cost in picture quality (just like you can't always trust auto-focus for precision work.) With a rifle, if you have a bipod, it will greatly improve your ability to hit the target, but you can't always have a bipod and a stable shooting position. When shooting a rifle, a "hasty sling" will help keep you on target better than nothing at all.

Eh...I like the strap that came with my Nikon just fine. It could be a little more comfortable (especially when backpacking...haven't found a good way to carry it yet) and the way I see it, the image stabilizing lenses are so good that if you need it to be that steady, you should just use a tripod...

I don't see it as the same as a rifle. If I'm off center on my camera shot by 1/32 inch, my target will still be captured...I just may need a bit of cropping...with a rifle, that 1/32 inch can mean missing your target at long range...I'd think a camera to be more like a shotgun...you want your target in frame and centered, but your accuracy doesn't need to be perfect to hit the target.

That strap does look pretty comfortable though...Still wouldn't be sure about backpacking...i'm not sure I'll ever find a good way to manage that...
